The Journey So Far

Welcome to Rye Soap Kitchen, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you .My name is Louisa and I am based in the ancient Cinque Ports town of Rye in East Sussex.  I started making soaps and bath bombs as a hobby in my kitchen at home with a handful of  ingredients and a dream..........

My dream was to have my own business combining my love for art and creativity along with my interests in horticulture and well being to produce unique designs with vibrant colours, gorgeous smells, botanics and all things that are good for you and your skin the handmade way, but it was just a dream and one I never thought I would be living.

In 2012 an opportunity knocked on my door. I was working at a dementia care home as care officer and an activities coordinator and my main job was to create and provide care and activity's for the patients that incorporated the use of the five senses. My friend/work colleague Kim (married to Michael Kingscote, clairaudient and clairvoyant) had tried a bar of my handmade soap and had really liked it. A few months later Kim told me about a man her husband worked with from time to time 'Colin Fry' International Spiritualist Medium. Colin had started up

his own company called 'Senses' and was looking for local people who made handmade bath products. I decided to take the leap and go for it, so I got into contact with Colin and went on to create him a  unique product range.
It was very hard going as I had to learn many things at triple speed. I had to find a unit to make my products in, find out how to be safety assessed and get assessed, then finding insurance and scouring the Internet night after night looking for best prices of raw ingredients to keep the costs down as I had a very low budget and was not in a position to borrow or take out a loan and then there was finding out where was the best place to get the labels done which took days of research and then there was the designing of the labels and of course designing the products, testing them and finding out all the ins and outs of that, it was a very big mountain I had to climb but I felt determined and kept saying to myself 'you can do this' over and over, I felt I had finally found something I was good at and something I enjoyed so I could only see that it would be good for my body and mind which in turn would make me healthier and happier in the long run. But that's in the long run of course as i can tell you now it was possibly the most stressful and in depth thing I have ever done, but I have had tremendous support from
my partner who has helped me all the way.

In 2013 I then decided it was time to open my own web shop, and with the help and support from my partner Mark Silver (soap mould and candle maker) and my brother in-law James Ash (photographer) I bring you my dream, Rye Soap Kitchen

Again this has not been easy as I had never had anything to do with web sites so lots of research was needed again into the early hours of the morning to try and figure out what to do , how to get traffic to your site and generally getting totally lost in goggle with all the different things required to make a web site work and i am still learning now. Also designing my products and making the labels using only Microsoft word, which is a real pain! and making the PIF Files to go with them and then there is actually making the stuff and getting customers its so unbelievably big the amount of work that goes into it, then I find out the EU decided to change the rules which meant my safety assessment needed updating which then meant I had to change some of my recipes and every thing now needs to be uploaded to an EU portal that is usually jammed due to the amount of people trying to do the same. 'STRESS' lol at least I am still laughing though and I am still as keen as ever. I apologise to my friends as they don't see much of me these days and its hard to explain how in depth and how much work really goes into setting up and having your own business but one day I hope to have them working with me, I am just not there yet:)

Anyway enough of that, now I am going to tell you a bit about my products.

My bath bombs are really big and fizzy and change the colour of the bath water. My bath melts are very luxurious and moisturising. All of my soaps are generally larger than average and made with pure vegetable glycerin and are mostly all SLS and Parbem free, making them suitable for sensitive skins. The result is a rich moisturising bar, gently cleansing, exceptionally mild and with a lasting lather bursting with fragrances and essential oils that can offer many health benefits .The soap's are my own designs and I use only the highest quality raw ingredients that have not been tested on animals, only enthusiastic friends and family!

I take pride in the quality and craftsmanship of my products and great care is taken to ensure that all my handmade items are of the highest standard.  I have been certified and safety assessed twice by an Independent Toxicologist in accordance with EU regulations, ensuring every product is safe to use.  My products are individually made, so colour or design may vary slightly from the pictures shown.  Each item is carefully inspected and wrapped by hand using recycled paper and card wherever possible, helping to reduce the impact on the environment. I am also a member of the the Guild of Craft Soap & Toiletry Makers.

I only pre-make a small quantity of soaps as I like for my customers to receive as freshly made soap as possible. I am always thinking up new idea's and designs so don't forget to check in from time to time to see what's new. I also make custom orders and wedding favours etc.! Let me know what's on your mind and I am sure we can arrange it.

On my next blog I am going to focus more on the products and tell you all about them one by one.

My partner has been busy making candles so they will also be available to buy soon.

Thanks for visiting my blog and I hope you will tune in again.
